Trusting him is the only way to save the kingdom.
Betraying her is the only way to keep them both alive.

Stripped of her memories and her magic, Raven has been left for dead.

As a prisoner in the enemy’s mineral mines, her only clue to who she is and where she came from is the mysterious map tattooed on her hand—a map containing hidden secrets that some people would kill for.

Jeddak is one of those people.

A warrior from the Kovak tribe, he’s hunting for the powerful Zavien stone to pay the corrupt king’s ransom. If he doesn’t return home with it by the new moon, his betrothed will be executed.

When Jeddak discovers that a prisoner named Raven has the only map that leads to the artifact, he allies with her as they navigate treacherous lands and battle against ancient magical forces to unravel the map’s secrets. But can Raven trust this stranger who’s helping her? If the map gets into the wrong hands, thousands of people will die.

As their feelings for each other grow, their tenuous alliance begins to fray. Until Jeddak is forced to make a decision—betray Raven or forsake his kingdom.

Choose wrong, and he’ll lose everything.

About Laurel Black

Laurel Black is an author and photographer. She loves creating visually-striking fantasy worlds with breathtaking landscapes and thrilling adventure. Growing up, she didn’t particularly enjoy reading until she was given The Hobbit. It was the first book she couldn’t put down and where her love of fantasy novels began. When not writing or behind a camera, you can find Laurel on a walk in the woods, searching town for the best vegan desserts, or reading novels that have happy endings. She lives in Nashville with her husband and their rescue dog, Parker, who also likes a good adventure and would probably like hobbits, too, if he met them.

Lost Kingdom is her debut novel.

A Riveting Tale of Magic and Memory
Loved it! This is an excellent debut novel!!The story begins with a heart-wrenching plight. One of the two main characters, Raven, has been stripped of her memories and her magic powers. It's this vulnerability that makes her journey so captivating and the character so relatable. The story is as much about self-discovery as it is about an adventurous quest. Raven's only link to her past is the cryptic map etched onto her skin—a treasure trove of secrets that could change thefate of their world. This map thrusts her into an uneasy alliance with Jeddak, a hardened warrior on his own perilous mission. The chemistry (and tension) between Raven and Jeddak is palpable, a slow-burning connection that adds a layer of depth to the story that is both believable and emotionally resonant.Together, Raven and Jeddak confront treacherous territories and ancient magical forces.I loved the suspense. The stakes couldn't be higher, and the tension is nail-biting. Who doesn't love a good map decipher? There are trust issues and burgeoning feelings—a recipe for a thrilling narrative and something you'll connect with personally. You will see yourself in these characters!Lost Kingdom has well-crafted world-building and an intricate plot, but its heart is what sets it apart. Laurel Black has nailed this, writing characters that are relatable and whom you want to see succeed. I can't wait for the additional books in this seriesIf you like moral dilemmas, internal struggles, and external conflicts, you will love Lost Kingdom as much as I do.

Raven was captured by the Rathalons and now works in the mines, and wants to escape, but she has no memory of who she was before she was captured. All she has is her name, and a dream with her brother in it. Meanwhile, Jeddak is trying to find the Zavien stone to save his betrothed from his king who is holding her hostage. He was told he would find a clue or map in Malengard where the mines, and he does, but the map is not quite what he expected.

This was a very enjoyable and adventurous read! I loved the world! The shifters, the different tribes, the different unique places we go to and then the magic!

I always wonder how an author will do with a character that has memory loss, and Laurel did a great job! Theresa whole time Raven is struggling with her identity, while also subconsciously remembering little things and forgetting others. She slowly learns about herself and you wonder the whole time when she will get her memory back. Raven is a fierce female character, a bit petty and annoying at times 😅, but I liked her development and look forward to seeing how she continues to grow in the next book!

Jeddak was a bit of a dark horse. Tall, dark, broody and handsome and he has a bear 😂 but he’s so sketchy and obviously has one goal in mind, to save his betrothed. I loved seeing him change as him and Raven travel together and learn about each other and get to know one another and his guilt starts to eat at him. And then you wonder, will he change his course or not? Both had very good developments!

And then the romance that slowly developed and yet didn’t quite get there. A great slow burn that leaves you hoping they’ll get together and then, well, you’ll see 😉

I wish the world development had a bit more detail to it, I mean it just felt like I was told things, but I wanted to see or experience them or have more detail about the world and its languages. And to me this was a very YA book too.

Overall, a great story with some side characters I really liked and look forward to seeing more of, plus more of this world in the next book!

This novel is a standout in the YA fantasy genre. I loved the blend of adventure, well-crafted action scenes, romance, and magic-- all the elements I love in a good YA novel.

At its core, Lost Kingdom is a story about the choices that define us and the bonds that can save or destroy us (and everything else).

The characters are dynamic and likeable. I saw myself in each of the characters, especially Raven, who is in the process of reclaiming her lost power. She's a strong, yet vulnerable protagonist. With each page, you want to see her win even more.

Jeddak is interesting. He's there to save his fiance, but things get complicated as he wrestles with his emerging feelings for Raven.

The conflict within the book is both heart-wrenching and deeply human. You will feel for both Raven and Jeddak, because you can empathize with both of them.

It kept me going from beginning to end and had a nice climax that I didn't see coming. Laurel Black is skilled at weaving a complex tapestry to keep you guessing.

Laurel Black's world-building is exceptional. It says in her bio that she's a photographer. You will notice this in the way she writes visual details. She describes in a way that pulls you into the story's universe, as if you're watching an IMAX movie with surround sound. If this book actually becomes a movie, it will be epic.
